Walled enclosure of Rada

Aerial view of the walled enclosure of Rada

Rada is a Mediaeval walled site that played a major strategic role in the defence of the Kingdom of Navarre until it was sacked in 1455.

The excavations carried out, apart from providing a range of archaeological findings, reveal how the settlement was organised. Many sections of street have been uncovered, over fifty houses, a large well, a chapel and a cemetery. All these can be seen during a visit to the site.

The visit to the site includes a walk along its streets, which have panels explaining the different elements of mediaeval town planning (main gate, lieutenant's house, well, cemetery, walls, beacon tower, etc.). The itinerary ends in the small Interpretation Centre located in the chapel of St Nicholas, where late Middle Ages materials (14th-15th centuries) recovered in the excavations carried out by the Government of Navarre are on display.
