Museum of Tudela-Dean´s Palace

Alabaster pieces on display in the Dean's Museum of Tudela.

The Museum of Tudela has been located in the Dean's Palace next to the Cathedral since June 2000. The origins of this noble house go back to the 15th century, although its most important architectural reform took place in the early 16th century on the initiative of Pedro de Villalón and Calcena, the most famous of the Deans of Tudela. The building was also used as accommodation for Kings and Popes who passed through the city. Further reforms to the palace took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its rooms contain pieces of religious art from a number of the city's churches: a collection of images from different eras and styles, Renaissance altarpieces, magnificent gold and silverwork and baroque canvases (we would highlight those of the painter Vicente Berdusán) and oil paintings such as the Day of Judgement from the 16th century, attributed to El Bosco.

The visitor can also admire archaeological remains from the old mosque of Tudela and a collection of ceramic pieces. A special place to be enjoyed during the visit is the Cathedral cloister, an authentic jewel of Spanish mainland Romanesque art.

Next to the Museum is the Cathedral, which contains art works of incalculable value from the mediaeval epoch (the Romanesque White Virgin, carved in stone, three outstanding gothic altarpieces, funeral sculpture), the Renaissance period (the pews of the chorus by Estaban de Obray) and the Baroque era (chapels of Santa Ana and the Holy Spirit, with profuse decoration in plasterwork).
