Ben Rivers

The house and the woods

Ben Rivers, filmmaker of the first images

It's high time you met Ben Rivers. After winning a Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2008, he's become one of the most sought-after filmmakers in festivals showing experimental documentaries. Last year, he also screened at the London Film Festival and the New York Film Festival's Views from the Avant-Garde, among many other events.

Rivers shoots on 16mm film on an old Bolex wind-up camera, and he hand-processes each film in his own kitchen sink. Rivers' films tend to fall into two categories: minimal, moody riffs on horror film traditions and tropes ─desolate and crumbling places evoking the RKO movies by the Tourneur-Lewton team─ and lyrical, poignant experimental documentary portraits of outcasts in nature in the far corners of Europe. A true creator of moods and atmospheres, Rivers is coming to Pamplona in person to show some of his most acclaimed films, like This Is My Land, House, The Coming Race or Ah, Liberty!, and two previously unseen works.
