One of the recent School Concerts in the Baluarte Auditorium.
This programme, a pioneering one in Spain (It first appeared in the 1993-1994 school year) endeavours to complete the musical education of nursery, primary and secondary school pupils in Navarre. This is achieved by attending concerts that have specially arranged for them. The most common format for these educational concerts is through musical stories. The magical qualities of the story and music come together in these performances. There is a clear educational element to them, although, besides being educational, they are intended to show the pupils how to conduct themselves while attending in a concert.
Attending these school concerts is really a three-phased activity. First, there is the advance classroom preparation on the part of the music teachers; then comes participation in the actual concert itself and, lastly, the school work that it generates. More than 25,000 pupils take part in the programme every year.
In this way, the task is to bring children closer to the Arts and, at the same time, to encourage and develop new audiences.
The School Concerts have been further extended by the staging of Family Concerts.
These concerts, which are open to the public and take place in a separate session, with the same programme as the School Concerts, give the pupils' families the opportunity to share this musical experience with them.
The Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra Pablo Sarasate (Navarre's symphony orchestra) works together on this programme as part of the official agreement it has with the Government of Navarre. The music professor and composer Fernando Palacios is the consultant on this programme.
