Uxue Barkos Berruezo

Uxue Barkos

Uxue Barkos Berruezo.

Born in Pamplona in 1964. She is married and has a son.

She graduated in Information Sciences from the University of Navarre (1988).

She began her professional career in 1984 as a journalist with RNE and TVE in Navarre. Subsequently she worked on the newspaper Navarra Hoy and, from 1990 onwards, on Euskal Telebista (ETB), where she wrote articles as the newspaper’s correspondent for Pamplona and later for Madrid. She was also an editor in the Iurreta news centre (Vizcaya). In 2004, she embarked on a leave of absence from her post in Basque public television.

It was precisely in 2004 that she stepped into the political arena as an independent candidate for the Nafarroa Bai (NaBai) coalition in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. In the 2004 elections she was elected an MP, and was re-elected in the 2008 general elections with Nafarroa Bai, and again in 2011, this time heading up the Geroa Bai coalition (she resigned her seat in June 2015 when she was elected to Navarre’s regional parliament in May of 2015).

As a member of parliament, in 2005 she received the award for most promising new MP, and in 2011 the Emilio Castelar award for best speaker, both from the Association of Parliamentary Journalists. She has also sat on several committees and subcommittees, representing the Mixed Group on the investigation committee into the Madrid terrorist attacks of 11th March.

She has also combined her work as an MP in Congress with her role as a councillor in Pamplona City Council in the 2007-2011 and 2011-2015 terms of office.

In July 2015, she was appointed Regional President of Navarre.
